Samples from SchoolhouseTeachers.com Homeschool Online Classes
My eighth grade daughter has been working through the 9-week course, “Century of Art” for middle school. Each week we read the lesson together on a pdf, which could be printed if we chose to, and then she selects one of the projects to do. After learning about Postimpressionism, she tried her hand at pointillism, like artist Georges Seurat, to make these flowers.
In the past I’ve spent hours trying to put together an art appreciation course like this by searching online and piecing activities together. It was too much work, and therefore, I wasn’t consistent. This course is just one example of how you can find exactly what you need to take the burden of planning off your plate and instead use that time to engage in learning with your kids.
My kindergartener has used some of the language arts resources for his grade level. Since he is an active learner, I found the course, “Everyday Games” to be the perfect homeschool online class for him. Instead of gathering lots of supplies and creating a game from scratch, I just print one off and use it straight away.
Below is an example of a game we played to practice making words that follow the consonant-vowel-consonant pattern.
My son enjoys reading books, watching videos, and playing games in the World Book Early Learning resource. I like how children have the option to read the books online to themselves or have them read aloud. The computerized woman’s voice sounds a bit unnatural at times, but overall the reading has good enunciation and intonation. It doesn’t bother my son at all.

Organizational Tools
Bookmarks & Custom Schedule Builder
The bookmark feature makes it easy to keep all the lessons I choose in one place. To access the classes I’ve bookmarked, I simply go to the menu bar, and select “Member Dashboard.” You can make custom bookmarks for every child you’re homeschooling.
This is how simple it was for me to create a sample curriculum for my son.
First, I selected “browse by grade level.” Then I chose a subject area to investigate, “Art.” I scrolled through the different course offerings, clicking on the one that interested me most. In this case, it was “Learning About Art.” Next, I read the course outline and looked at a sample lesson to get a sense of whether it was a good fit for my child. Finally, I created a “Kindergarten” bookmark and added the course to my list.
Scope & Sequence
If you’re not sure what to choose for homeschool online classes, SchoolHouseTeachers.com has a scope and sequence that outlines the goals or expectations that are typical for each grade level. These are only suggestions and not aligned to the Common Core. But it can help give you a guideline for what to cover in an academic year.
Focused Learning Centers
If you are homeschooling a high school student and need help with credits, transcripts, etc. there is a specific high school and college help center. This is huge for parents, like me, who are intimidated when their child reaches high school. Careful record keeping of credits is crucial for college acceptance.
Some other focused learning centers cover topics like homeschooling children with special needs, helping with reading, using the Charlotte Mason approach, and hands-on learning.
Literacy Center
If you are teaching a child to read, and not sure where to start, the literacy center has a helpful tool for determining your child’s reading level. As you read through the descriptors for each level, stop when you come to a sentence that is not true for your child. If the statement is in Emerging Readers, then that is likely your child’s reading level.
For each statement, there is a drop-down menu that provides helpful tips, activities, and games to help you teach your child that specific skill. Many of the suggestions are links to activities that are ready for you to print and use.
In the literacy center you’ll find access to leveled books to match the reading level of your child. You can print some books, and access the others through the World Books website. Upper elementary readers include comprehension questions for discussion.
