Our girl has been begging to “do school” for a long time. She turned 5 a few months ago and I held off doing anything “formal” because I didn’t have the energy!
Now, I’m excited about it too! Since we’re both ready, here we go!
I’m using My Father’s World Kindergarten as a framework. I’ll do a lot of other supplemental things, but I’ll be sticking to their order of introducing letter sounds and blends. I’ll also try to do the recommended Science, but I’m terrible at sticking with that stuff
Supplemental teaching resources for this week:
Help for teaching handwriting the letter “S” from Donna Young.
Itsy Bitsy Book
Books about the Sun:
“The Sun Is Always Shining Somewhere” by Allan Fowler
“Exploring the Sun” by Rebecca Olien
Our middle child is begging to do kindergarten. Am I ready for two kids in school?
I’ve started my shopping list for school for next year!
My Father’s World has been a great way to start out our homeschool experience. It is easy and effective without a lot of busy-work. I have very much enjoyed using it. However, as we move forward and use a co-op next year (yeah!) as our oldest will be in 2nd grade, I’m looking at moving toward something else. We’re also starting the new adventure of having 2 in school.
Kindergarten Wish List-
My Father’s World Kindergarten (I’ll only need the student sheets)
Institute for Excellence in Writing: Writing program
Singapore Math- Kindergarten
2nd Grad Wish List-
Singapore Math: 1B/2A
Apologia Botany – Student Notebook. (I had the Botany text book given to me!)
Learning Language Arts Through Literature (Red book)
That’s the start of our list. Getting excited about the possibilities!
We’ve made it past the half-way point for our year. It’s time for an update!
I can’t put my finger on when it happened, but Ethan is reading EVERYTHING now! When we’re driving somewhere, he is always reading signs and vehicles. It’s so fun.
So, the reading is going very well.
We’re on week 26 of Math U See. I don’t remember how I learned subtraction, but I’m thinking this approach is a little different (adding to the subtract), but it seems to work for Ethan. We’re very close to finishing this level. Only a couple of weeks left.
The things that we’re struggling with are mostly because of being in a hurry. That’s where handwriting can be a struggle. I keep reminding myself that it’s a fine motor skill that needs to be practiced and that he should grow into it soon if we keep at it.
My own person obstacles have been how I don’t like to do projects. I know! I should probably not be homeschooling and I need to get over this reluctance! When it’s time to do an experiment or get out supplies, I want to skip it!
I would rather just fill in the worksheets and be done.
So, I guess that MY thing to work on. Maybe Ethan could work on handwriting while I work on doing art and science projects!
My son brought this to me last week while I was working on my Bible study.
